"It has been many years since I enjoyed this rich and lively novel, however the story and the characters have stayed with me ever since. "The red tent" is based on the biblical story of Dinah from the Old Testament. This is an epic tale set in 1500bc Mesopotamia, the "cradle of civilisation".
Dinah is the only daughter of Jacob and Leah, his first of four wives. The wives all work together to raise the children and so Dinah is raised into a strong sisterhood of midwives. The red tent is a sacred space where women carry out their rituals surrounding menstration and child-birth. It is also a great place for conversation and the passing down of knowledge. For lovers of the "Dove-keepers". A masterful novel. Reviewed by Gaby".
