Kerrie Hanafin is Managing Director of 'A Woman's Touch', a building company that employs 20 staff, 17 of whom are women. She made the decision to start the business after one particularly shoddy tiling company had visited her home. She won the NatWest Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2006, and the BT Female Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2007. She divides her time between homes in Hampshire and Spain.

Getting started - the tools, the trades and when to ask for help. Know your home - services, heating, lighting, wall types. Decorating - painting, wallpapering and tiling. Floors - replacing, sanding, measuring. Doors and windows - fitting locks, new glass, draught-proofing, hanging. Water - taps, blocked sinks and drains, cisterns, boilers, pipes, radiators, installing washing machines and dishwashers. Electrics - what you can legally do, plugs, lights, fuses, circuits, cookers. All those other DIY jobs - from putting up curtain poles and changing cupboard doors to installing intruder alarms and phone extensions. Dealing with problems - including condensation, mould, men, wood decay, security, infestations.
