In 1873, Isabella Bird, daughter of a clergyman, embarked alone on a life of adventurous travel. She rode through the American West, wearing Hawaiian riding dress, where she climbed mountains, helped to round up cattle, and met settlers and miners. These letters were first published in 1879.
