He proceeds from his pre-war cadet training through a time in the Home Guard to his conscription into the full-time force, on to training in New Zealand and Egypt and fighting in Italy from the Battle of Monte Cassino until the end of the war, and into a standoff with the Yugoslavs during their attempt to annex Trieste.
